Account Services on the Web

Uses of Personal Certificates

Signing
Used to sign documents (most typically emails) to prove the identity of the sender.

Encryption
Used to protect a document (again, often an email) from unauthorized viewing.

Key Escrow
In order to protect the business interests of the University, if your personal certificate includes the Encryption capability, the secret key associated with it will be escrowed so that it can, with proper authorization, be recovered in the event it is lost. This is non-negotiable.
