Using Apple FileVault and ASW Key Escrow

This page shows the steps to encrypt the disk on a Macintosh computer using Apple's FileVault (which is included free with OS X) and then to save the "Recovery Key" in ASW's Key Escrow.

Start by clicking on the Apple Symbol in taskbar in the upper left corner of your screen, then select System Preferences... from the menu which drops down.
Then click on Security & Privacy.
Then choose the FileVault tab.

If the tab says File Vault is turned on for the disk "Macintosh HD", then your system is already encrypted and you may proceed directly to escrow your recovery key. If not, continue.

If the lock icon in the lower left hand corner of the tab is closed, click on it to be able to make changes. If not skip the next step.

Enter the Name and Password of an Admin user and click on the Unlock button.
The control panel should now be unlocked so you can make changes.

Click on the Turn On FileVault... button.

If your system has more than one user defined, you will be asked if any other users should be allowed to decrypt the disk (to allow the system to boot).

Typically, you would want most users to be able to do this.

However, you will need to enter their password to allow them to do so. If you do not know it, you can skip this step and enabled them later.
